From Consciousness to Form
Fluid Modern World

The artist, who does not choose to imitate the manifestations of nature in an artistic way and who wants to express his inner world, is jealous of the fact that music, which is the most materialistic of all arts, can reach this goal naturally and easily. As a natural result of this, he tries to apply the methods of music in his art. Thus, rhythm, mathematics, abstract structures, the repetitive note of colors, colors in motion appear in painting.[1]

For Kandinsky, the best teacher comes from music. The form in which the artist can reveal himself, his life, his feelings and his subject without describing the nature directly and unmediated; is music. One of the main elements of this form is words. The organic connection between poetry and music has fed this tradition since the emergence of language. Paul Valery, for the poet, “is like a potter, taking ordinary material, sifting it, separating its pebbles, and applying the shape in his mind to the material. He always finds himself between what exists and what he wants to do. Within it, the expected and unexpected things move into action and reaction at the same time. This is the divinity within. God created us from a little red earth and less ideas. But the true poet, who can create something flawless, finds it worthwhile to take the risk of embarking on a work.”

In the light of the above-mentioned arguments, I think about the contribution of Bob Dylon, who is considered one of the greatest poets and musicians of our time, to art, literature and his age. In 2016, Bob Dylon was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature, which caused great surprise in some circles. The concepts of literature, poetry, music and art were discussed again. Many authorities declared that they were disappointed with this decision. Our Nobel Prize-winning author, Orhan Pamuk, explained his feelings on the subject as follows:

“I am deeply disappointed that Dylan was awarded the 2016 Nobel Prize in Literature. I think this award should be given to more famous names in the literary world. I would love that. There are many great American writers who deserve this award. Dylan is a famous person, he writes songs and poetry. But Dylan isn't famous for his literary talents. I think many writers were offended on the day the award was announced… I criticize this decision.”

Based on this whole agenda, I think about the knowledge that the artist can reach the determined goal in the easiest and most natural ways, away from materiality and without repetition, and that the poet can sift an ordinary material, separate its pebbles, shape it, and add divinity to it.

The Nobel committee justified the nomination as “Lyrics and music contributed to the re-establishment of the indispensable traditional connection between poetry and music; thereby permeating the world and changing its history as well.defined as “. The general criterion in the field of literature of the committee is to have given "ideally superior works"; The committee explained why the award was given to Dylan.created new poetic expressions within the deep-rooted American song tradition” he explained.

Secretary General Sara Danius described Dylan as “who writes poetic texts to be performed with musical instrument accompanimentHe even compared it to the ancient Greek poets Homer and Sappho. Daniel "Bob Dylan is a great English-speaking poet, it's an obvious fact. Inspired by John Milton and William Blake, but having an understanding that blends today's literary traditions with the local language, Dylan has fed his repertoire from a wide region, from local Appalachian songs to southern delta blues. To date, no one has been able to do what Bob Dylan, whose works can be seen even influenced by Rimbaud and French modernism, and who can uniquely melt all this heritage in the same pot."[2] says and a great discussion is ignited.

The committee's judgments support Paul Valery's statement that “the poet is obliged to protect his homeland”. The argument that what Dylon did was that he had further developed the existing tradition by inheriting his legacy shows that the starting point of the committee is not a very baseless place.

In this case, it can be said that the word "poet" is not descriptive for Dylan, he will be referred to as "a poet" who carries the tradition he brought from the most ancient period on his shoulder in the modern period. He made the grandeur and power of the word attractive with the talismanic power of music.

Poetry walks with the society and the age, not like a shadow of course, but arm in arm with each other. Capturing this harmony, the poet also creates the memory of his age.

In our country, where language preferences were shaped for ideological reasons, the word "bard" was substituted for "poet". At least by some readers. Of course, in time, the "poet" took his throne back from the "bard", due to the tendency of the language to adapt to its own mathematics, to its own bed like a flowing river, in all situations and circumstances. But the main thing here is to underline the place where music, the richness of social interaction and a fluid persona meet with literature.

Well, a magical moment when an architect meets literature or a detail where a painter reveals the images of a great poem can also be considered a literary work. Can we deny that Le Corbuiser has poems in metal and concrete? Or is it in vain that Jean Cocteau calls a photographer like Man Ray the "Poet of the Dark Rooms"?

Is there really a big difference between John Morrison's "Lizards" and Bonnefoy's "Salamander"? Can't an American rock star and a French poet be drawn towards each other like atomic particles in art?

It is not difficult to guess the answers. So once again;

When the music starts playing for him too...
